Jonathan Bunge Chicago has worked in law for many years. During his career, he started to consider what makes a good lawyer. He wanted to know what to advise people who asked him how they could find a good law firm in Chicago. After some time, Bunge decided to take a look at this in greater detail, breaking it down in the issues people face when trying to find a lawyer, and the things that they should specifically look for.

Jonathan Bunge Chicago on Issues with Law Firms

One of the greatest problems that Bunge believes people have, is that they do not trust lawyers. They think that, somehow, these professionals are somehow above the law themselves. In fact, this has been the content of many Hollywood movies, in which law firms manage to get their clients, who were obviously guilty, off the hook with nothing but a slap on the wrist. And then, there is the fact that people believe lawyers are so expensive, they will never be able to afford a good one themselves.

Bunge agrees that these firms exist. There are firms that seem to be shrouded in secrecy and to deal with cases such as OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson. Those are the firms that do, indeed, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. But they are not necessarily the best law firms there and it certainly does not mean that other firms aren’t any good.

Jonathan Bunge Chicago on Finding a Good Law Firm

So what should you look for in a goodlaw firm? According to Bunge, there are a couple of key things. Those are:

  1. Compassion. Nobody wants to have any legal problems. When someone needs a law firm, it is because they are going through something that they would rather not go through. Hence, it is important that a lawyer shows empathy and compassion, and to demonstrate that they are on their client’s side.
  2. Expertise. If at all possible, you should avoid going to a general lawyer and choose one that specializes in a certain area of the law. For instance, if you are going through a divorce, you should find a family lawyer. If you have been fired from your job, you should search for an employment lawyer. These designations demonstrate that they have completed extra training in specialized areas of the law.
  3. Experience. While it is certainly true that you need to give people a chance to develop experience, this should not be on the back of your very serious legal problems. You need to find someone who has many years of experience and who have dealt with other cases like yours successfully in the past.
  4. Reputation. Last but not least, you should determine the lawyer or law firm’s reputation. Find out what others have experienced when they used their services. This can easily be found through social media, but also through dedicated third party websites such as Avvo.
